The Many Logistics that Consume our Lives:
When planning your school year, map out your route to school, whether your children take the bus, go in a carpool, or you are just driving. Determine how long it takes to go across town or even down the street driving to and from your specific school(s). When you have two children in two different schools or after school activities, you will be in the car longer. The frustrations of our increased traffic has and will continue to play a stressful part in your day. As parents, our stress levels often increase once school starts, so think ahead and plan to start earlier to reduce your anxiety. We encourage finding people you can trust to share your driving, swapping days or carpools with each other. Create back up plans for your children’s pick ups for when unexpected things arise.
Planning your fall schedule:
It is easy to get mired in the details of which activities each child may want. Make that spread sheet, determine what days are the worst for you and for driving, times for pick up, and put in time for homework and play. Dinner planning and homework can be another added stress. Again we encourage you to make a family chart which includes all events, activities, doctors appointments and even free time. It will change of course, but everyone must see a schedule to understand just how many moving pieces there are on a given weekday. Be sure to allow time for the emergency doctor’s visit or dentist. Think about which day can be the extra day for downtime or a doctor.
It is better to be proactive than reactive. Get a head start on your organization.
Some lingering effects of covid:
Studies continue to show that the residual effects of COVID-19 are decreasing. However, a fascinating British study highlights some lasting impacts on children, even those born during the pandemic. These impacts include a lack of exercise, communication deficits, social challenges, and isolation. It is important to be aware of these effects as we continue to navigate raising our children. We encourage you to ensure your children remain active and maintain open communication with you.
